Jaw Surgery
Jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) is recommended when significant abnormal jaw growth has occurred.
Abnormal growth of the upper or lower jaw causes a bad bite (malocclusion). When the malocclusion is significant, jaw surgery (in conjunction with orthodontics) may be the best option to correct the problem. Surgery involves moving the upper jaw, lower jaw, or both to correct the bite. Jaw surgery can result in an improved bite, smile, and facial esthetics.
Jaw surgery may not be necessary if orthodontics can correct the malocclusion.
Early detection and treatment of jaw growth problems frequently allows us to correct malocclusion using orthodontics alone.
