FAQ

When should my child be evaluated by an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontics recommends children be evaluated by an orthodontist by age 7, or earlier if a problem is detected. At age 7, children start transitioning from baby teeth to permanent teeth, allowing us to determine if the bite is developing properly. Detecting orthodontic problems at an early age allows us to treat your child in the least invasive and most cost effective manner possible.

When is the ideal age to get orthodontic treatment?
The ideal age varies for every person, depending on growth and development of the teeth, jaw bones, and facial structures. Starting treatment at the right time has a huge impact on the final outcome. For children with abnormal growth of the jaw bones, we like to begin treatment before their ‘growth spurt’, so that we can use their growth to help correct the bite. Dr. Gilbert will advise you on the ideal time for you or your child to begin treatment.

Am I “too old” to improve my smile with orthodontics?
No- In fact, about 30% of our patients are adults! With healthy gums and supporting bone, the teeth can be straightened at any age. Aligning your teeth and bite is not just about improving your appearance, it also helps prevent many dental problems, including: premature wear and tooth chipping, tooth trauma, and gum disease.

How do I know if I am a candidate for clear aligners?
Call to schedule a free consultation. Clear aligners allow us to give you a more beautiful smile, without using braces and wires. At the consultation, we will listen to your concerns, perform a thorough evaluation, and determine if clear aligners are the best treatment option for you!

If I am not a candidate for clear aligners, are there other esthetic options?
Yes! Ceramic braces are clear and are a great choice for people wanting to avoid the look of metal braces.
